Simple things to think about to start:-
a) how much money you want to spend?
b) large (1/8), medium (1/10), small (1/18, 1/24) scale?
c) for racing or for simple play around?
d) for short term play or serious long term hobby?

all depends . . . . most hobbiest C-Hing would have spent thousands  

The easiest to ask yourself first two questions?
