One other thing is that with gear diff:-
- if no high density oil/diff grease, power on the contact wheel (typically outside) drops on fast corner which affects turn out.
- if diff gear is plastic, they can break easily if there is no slipper clutch
Ball diffs dont have this problem.
With ball diff:-
- the pressure/pull between two wheels is easily adjustable. Wherease with gear diff, its depends on the thinkness of the diff grease (high dense diff grease give higher/tighter pull), but it is not easily adjustable as you need to change diff grease (like with damper shocks)
Preference is still ball diffs particularly for setting up with different tracks conditions. Besides the issue with power slip can be reduced these days electronically in the esc.
Years ago, car kit com with gear diff, all ching will pay extra money to upgrade to ball diff.

Agreed. In 80's, a lot of buggy came with front one way instead of ball diff to reduce the salling price. A lot of players updated it to ball diff. Nowadays, people upgrade the front ball diff to one way or stud
