The problems with the B5, B6 and B8 series of IMAX chargers are very well documented in the internet, mostly in RC planes sites. Go do a Google search.
They are basically "copy" products of the original Bantom chargers, even down to the software. The biggest problem is that they use cheaper electronic components inside which makes them measure voltages inaccurately. They do have a calibration setup mode which you can attempt to calibrate the balance circuit and also the total voltage circuit, this can improve things a little but will not get away from the inferior components inside.
There is now a second generation "copy" of the IMAX 'B6" copies!! these sell even cheaper, but again, same copy software and components. My advice would be to buy one of these, until you can afford a better Hyperion or Mega charger. These chargers will last you a long time.
Buy yourself a decent balancer and don't use the balance circuit on the B6, or the cheaper copies, you will find the charge time will be much less, the charge quality much better.
The B6 I have had to have it power cord re-soldered back onto the main unit twice! That's how bad the quality is!
Look in the RC airplanes shops, they have been using Lipos for a lot longer than cars and there is a lot more epxerience built up there. I have been using Lipos since 6C was the max discharge you can find.....compared to todays' 40-50C ratings!!
Lipos are a very different animal to Nimh and Nicad, you can kill them will one bad cycle, or leaving them stored incorrectly for too long. |
