I think the issue is what you are looking for exactly.  If you look for performance, go for Hobbywing for sure.  But if you just want to feel the nostalgia for the good old days when Novak was the king, then Novak is still a good choice.

With no doubt ..

Tekin is the best overall, esp with the Gen II, with long long history since the 80's great engineering + cheap labour to build in China, (not bad QC too) it is the most popular racing brand in NA, (not too sure about Europe)

On the other hand, Novak has been a bit stubborn, pretty much keep everything in house, their "HV" esc were popular for Traxxas, but not the greatest, then for some reason their GTB/Hovac etc are not that popular, (recent price dropped does help) when I see so many "NOVAK" stickers I still have around the house, I still keep buying them, and "so far so good" other then the best ESC is the one that I have problem, the Activ 8. (I don't race)   But I have the say the Activ8 is awesome, yes, it is expensive and big in size, but it is so damn smooth, great power, true "turbo boost", with 4s, almost feel like with 5s ...

However, it doesn't last long ...       I bought the second one (version II) but I haven't hooked it up yet ..
