I think centre shaft is a must buy stuff for fast car as the gear will wear out with high speed motor.
Motor gear & Motor heat sink is a must buy item as well. I prefer PN one.
pinion gear=motor gear
I run 3 AWD with fast motors without buying any metal centre shaft. You have to adjust the position of the differential using the shims given carefully. The differentials have to be smooth but not slipping.

Thanks you guys details! very useful for a newbie to build a fast AWD!
A few reasons why you may find the original centre shaft not durable:
1. too much or no clearance between the gears. (needs careful adjustment)
2. you did not glue the gears to the shaft.
3. you brake hard and very often***
4. the plastic pieces used to secure the centre shafts are not well installed.
5. the screw holes used to install the above plastic pieces have worn out.
6. bearings don't fit (too loose)
***I understand why some people cannot do without a metal gear centre shaft. They may later find out that they not only pay more for the metal centre shaft, but also need to buy differential gears more often (very expensive to what I know now). Think of replacing the centre shaft more often instead.
