I suggest the Lunchbox or even WW2 as they are durable and fun to play with.... A Grasshopper is good but after a while your son might not be able to show off some "tricks" like WW2 or LB can (wheelies) and get bored with it.....
Give your son a WW2 or LB for a few good years and get him a DF03 (or even DF04 by that time) and start racing!
It seems that LB is not so durable when comparing with Grass Hopper. LB's body poles seem to be the weakest part. However, LB is more funny as it can (wheelies).
Up to this moment, I intend to let him play a slow speed Grass Hopper (w/ 380 motor) as training car. May get an LB later.
why don't you think about the RC boys? Cheap and slow...

I got an RC boy for my son, but it is a on-road car only. I think an off-road is better for him. Bro monkichi0210's guess is 100% correct.
And you know, for kids, they like to play "big cars" like ours. So, they would rather have a slower 1/10 than a faster 1/18. To them, 1/18 would make no different from their ToysRUs cars. And I also agree that Off-road is better as it can run on-road, off-road, grass, sand....etc.
